Houston Girl Scout expands music therapy room to earn Gold Award

Houston, TX – Girl Scout Jennifer R. helped develop the music therapy room for Bo's Place to earn Girl Scouts of the USA’s Gold Award, the highest award a Girl Scout can receive. Less than five percent of girls who join Girl Scouts achieve this national recognition.

“I read studies of child and adolescent therapy and results of the effectiveness of music in grieving,” said Jennifer, a 2012 graduate of St. Pius X High School. “I also learned about professional communications in etiquette, and the importance of communication.”

The Girl Scout Gold Award represents the highest achievement in Girl Scouting; it recognizes girls in grades 9 through 12 who demonstrate extraordinary leadership through sustainable and measurable Take Action projects. Since 1916, girls have successfully answered the call to Go Gold, an act that indelibly marks them as accomplished members of their communities and the world.

“Bo's Place is a non-profit organization that helps children and their families that are experiencing grief,” said Jennifer. “I chose this project because their music room was in need of improvement. After requiring their services myself, I wanted to give back.”

For her project, Jennifer led a team of volunteers in seeking donations for the development and expansion of a music therapy room for Bo's Place. She painted canvas wall décor and worked with Bo's Place personnel to liven up the music room.

Jennifer was a member of Girl Scouts for 12 years. At St. Pius X High School she was a member ofNational Honor Society, theater, and made the Dean's List Honor Roll. She currently attends the University of Houston and is studying biology.
