GSSJC partners with Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores to promote Girl Scout Centennial

Vintage uniforms to be worn at National Convention in Houston

HOUSTON (August 24, 2011) –- The style of Girl Scouts may have changed over the past 100 years, but the mission is the same: To build girls of courage, confidence and character.

In celebration of 100 years of Girl Scout history, Girl Scouts is partnering with Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores to bring back vintage uniforms from 1912 for Girl Scouts of the USA’s (GSUSA) 52nd National Convention.

During the Convention, more than 100 Girl Scouts will wear their navy, vintage uniforms to perform the opening flag ceremonies at 7:30 a.m. on November 10. To make the uniforms, Girl Scouts will hold sewing events at Jo-Ann’s locations throughout Houston and will provide sewing kits containing fabric and uniform patterns.

The events are open to anyone who would like to support Girl Scouts in a fun and unique way. Council volunteers will also be available to instruct volunteers how to make the uniforms.

Those who are interested can contact Melissa Hardy at 713-292-0367 and pick up their sewing kits at the Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council (GSSJC) located at 3110 Southwest Freeway Houston, Texas 77098.

In addition, the Jo-Ann company, a long-time supporter of GSUSA, will have a booth on display at the exhibit hall during the convention.
