Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council Welcomes ABC 13 Co-Anchor Sharron Melton to Board of Directors
HOUSTON (June 1, 2010) – Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council welcomes Sharron Melton as a member-at-large of the Council’s board of directors, effective June 1. Melton assumes her role as the Council prepares to host the 52nd National Convention of Girl Scouts of the USA in November 2011, a celebration that is also expected to launch the 100th anniversary celebration of Girl Scouting in the United States.
As a board volunteer, Melton will help provide strategic guidance and leadership to one of the largest Girl Scout councils in the country, with more than 72,000 girls served and 17,000 adult volunteers across 26 southeast Texas counties. A natural entertainer with a love of social interaction and sharing information, Melton has become one of Houston’s favorite co-anchors on ABC-13’s award winning morning newscast from 5 a.m. -7 a.m. And, she says her childhood involvement in Girl Scouts helped her get to where she is today. A Girl Scout alumna, Melton joined Girl Scouting as a Brownie but remained involved as an adult volunteer. For the past two years, she has served as guest judge at GSSJC’s signature Just Desserts event, where local chefs compete with desserts they create using Girl Scout cookies.
Melton holds a Master's degree in Television Communication from Eastern New Mexico University and a Bachelor's degree in Speech Communication and Journalism from Texas A&M University, in College Station. She is also a member of the Houston Chapter of the Links, Inc., the National Association of Black Journalists, and a former member of the board of directors of the Family Counseling Center of Mobile, Alabama.
Girl Scouts of the USA is the world's preeminent organization for girls, with a membership of more than 3.4 million girls and adults. Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. Chartered by GSUSA to provide Girl Scouting locally, Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council is one of the largest Girl Scout councils in the country serving more than 72,000 girl members and 17,000 adults in 26 southeast Texas counties.
