The New Girl Scout Journey is here!
It’s Your Planet—Love It! touts environmental focus
HOUSTON, TX (July 27, 2009) - The moment all Girl Scouts have been waiting for has finally arrived… the new leadership Journey is here! With an Earth-friendly theme, It’s Your Planet—Love It! invites girls of every age on an adventure to explore the wonders of Earth as they enjoy the natural world, and investigate the science that keeps our Earth -and us - spinning.
It’s Your Planet-Love It! journeys invite girls to meet female professionals from around the globe who are already saving the planet via original profiles - researched through first person inter¬views with scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs, artists, and more. Along this journey, Girl Scouts seek answers to some interesting questions, including:
- What happens when dirty water “disappears” down the drain? Where does it go? Why does it matter?
- How much energy could you save getting from here to there if you did it differently? And how much energy is that building using up?
- What would it take to grow enough food to feed the whole planet?
It’s Your Planet – Love It! is the second leadership Journey series for the Girl Scouts. Last year’s series, It’s Your World – Change It! helped girls understand what it means to be a leader who makes a difference in the world. The Journeys are part of the new Girl Scout Leadership Experience, a model that engages girls in discovering themselves, connecting with others, and taking action to make the world a better place.
The Girl Scout Leadership Journeys™ invite girls to explore a theme through many experiences and from many perspectives. All the joys of travel are built right in: meeting new people, finding new things, making memories, gathering keepsakes. Along the way, girls take on challenges that guide them to develop their leadership skills and values and earn awards recognizing their accomplishments. Fun, friendship, challenges, active leadership. That’s a Girl Scout Journey. That’s making the world a better place.
Each companion guide for adult volunteers offers key information about the journey, its awards, and its leadership benefits, along with step-by-step sample plans for sessions with the girls. The adult guides also feature Girl Scout history, tips for getting out in the great outdoors, details about how to add your own “bells and whistles” to the journeys in partnership with girls, and unique activity sheets for use in the sessions.
