Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council Unveils New Sailing Center

For several decades, Girl Scout mariners have flocked like seagulls to Camp Casa Mare to enjoy everything the seaside sailing camp has to offer. And now, as we usher in the 2009 sailing season, campers have one more reason to get excited – the new sailing center is now open!

On March 29th, members, volunteers and supporters of the Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council sailing program gathered at the new facility to celebrate it’s completion with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and time-capsule burial.

The sailing center includes a classroom and large workshop area that allows sailboats to be brought inside with their masts up for repairs, preventive maintenance and in-door teaching opportunities. We're very excited about the top-notch program opportunities the sailing center provides for the membership of GSSJC.

“The sailhouse has always been where everything has started and to have a new one is an absolute joy,” says Girl Scout Serena Hudson, who has been a mariner since 2006. “I think I speak for all the mariners and sponsors when I say thank you so much for the time, effort and money that has been put into building such an extraordinary sailing center!”

The sailing program at Casa Mare has opportunities for older girls to become mariners through instruction weekends, aquatics weekends and resident camp. Equipped with dormitories for living quarters, this tropical paradise on Galveston Bay is for ocean lovers and landlubbers alike. The warm, salty breezes, the call of gulls, and the sight of sailing vessels gliding across the bay provide the perfect setting for seaside fun.

Campers may focus on water sports such as sailing, SCUBA and skin diving. A fleet of Sunfish sailboats, Lasers and sloops provides a challenging experience for those who wish to gain expertise or just enjoy recreational sailing. Other activities for the landlubber include crabbing, nature crafts and identification, stargazing, swimming, sports, bird watching and archery.
