Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council Recognizes Local Volunteers

Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council (GSSJC) recently honored Girl Scout volunteers Jane Mahavier and Jo Blackburn for their many years of service to the organization. They received their awards during the annual spring GSSJC recognition event.

Mahavier was honored with the 45 Year Membership Pin. Membership Numerals are presented for total years of registered membership including both girl and adult years combined.

“All the fun and experiences she had as a girl in Scouting gave her a great foundation when she started with her daughter’s troop,” said Council Volunteer Carole Lowenkron. “How many lives can one individual influence over 45 years? Definitely too many to count. But you can bet that Jane has captured every memorable moment in pictures – that’s how she got her camp name – Shutterbug.”

Blackburn received the Appreciation Pin. The Appreciation Pin is a national recognition awarded to registered adults who have given outstanding service above the requirements of the position(s) they have held. They must have served at least one geographic service unit or program delivery audience.

“In all her activities—whether it’s as the training coordinator for the Council Puppetry Troupe, developing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) activities for girls and leaders, serving on the Council Cookie Committee, STUDIO 2B task force, and Campership Committee, or making arrangements for rallies in her service unit, Jo commits wholeheartedly and delivers quality work,” said Council volunteer Rosemary Haffemann.

Girl Scouts of the USA is the world's preeminent organization for girls, with a membership of more than 3.7 million girls and adults. Today, as when founded in 1912, GSUSA helps cultivate values, social conscience, and self-esteem in young girls, while also teaching them critical life skills that will enable them to succeed as adults. Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

Chartered by GSUSA to provide Girl Scouting locally, Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council is one of the largest Girl Scout councils in the country serving over 63,000 girl members and 18,000 adults in 25 southeast Texas counties. For more information call 1-800-392-4340 or visit

GSSJC Pluralism Statement
Embracing and promoting pluralism is an integral part of every activity and plan of Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council, not disconnected or separate projects. Only individuals willing to accept and be educated about the basic tenet that Girl Scouting is for all girls may serve in volunteer leadership or staff positions.
