Girl Scout Night with the Houston Rockets Teaches Local Girls About Professional Basketball

Houston Comet Tammy Jackson to Speak to Local Girl Scouts before Game Tip Off

(FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Houston, January 26, 2001) Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council (GSSJC) will be in the house at Compaq Center to see the Houston Rockets battle the Vancouver Grizzlies on Friday, January 26 at 6:15 p.m.

Houston Comet Tammy Jackson will address local Girl Scouts, offering pointers on basketball and the game of life, while she signs autographs prior to game tip off at 7:30 p.m. This is the first such collaboration between the Houston Rockets organization and GSSJC. "We hope to expand upon this event and do ever bigger and better events with both the Rockets and Comets," says GSSJC Program Manager Carin Crowe. GirlSports, the Girl Scout Sport Initiative, has encouraged 114,000 Girl Scouts in 298 Councils, including San Jacinto, to pursue the sport of their dreams. Crowe, who administers GirlSports for the San Jacinto Council, says the program grows the confidence level of girls during the ‘tween’ years of eight to 12. "Our GirlSports program is providing hundreds of girls the opportunity to learn about all aspects of different sports, like tennis, golf, hockey, and yes, basketball…girls can do anything, and our Girl Scouts are living proof," she adds.

Participating Girl Scouts will receive a specially designed patch with purchase of game tickets. Non-Girl Scouts are welcome to attend. For ticket information, call 713-627-DUNK.

Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council serves 50,000 girls and 13,000 adults in 21 east and southeast Texas counties. For information about joining Girl Scouts, call 1-800-392-4340 and ask for Membership. Visit us online at
